Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering (HIFE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

This Senior Sustainability Hardware Engineering position requires leadership, strategic planning, and project management skills. The Senior Sustainability Hardware Engineer will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the organization's sustainability efforts and play a key role in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Responsibilities

  • Program management and stakeholder engagement to support the organization’s sustainability strategy to ensure alignment with the existing corporate-wide sustainability commitments and preferred policy positions for Microsoft Cloud Hardware.

  • Bring life cycle assessment & hardware expertise to teams of data scientists and engineers, providing insights around complex environmental challenges and tradeoffs related to carbon accounting, embodied emissions, circularity, and other sustainability related impacts.

  • Drive implementation of cross-functional deliverables with a focus on resource efficiency and prioritization.

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across the organization to promote sustainability best practices and drive progress on performance initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of Microsoft’s cloud hardware.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to internal teams and stakeholders to drive engagement, promote alignment to Microsoft’s corporate sustainability commitments, and embed sustainability principles throughout the organization.

  • Manage rhythm of business for Sustainability team to drive proactive alignment and prioritization across initiatives.

  • Provide continuous feedback and contributes to the improvement of project operational efficiencies; provides recommendations to improve efficiency within working group.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce the organization’s environmental impact in service of Microsoft’s corporate commitments in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

  • Support in the creation of a framework for measuring sustainability impact of hardware design, material, and supplier selection

  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure progress in alignment with Microsoft’s corporate-wide sustainability goals.

Qualifications

  • Requried:

    • S. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science or equivalent

    • 3+ years experience working in corporate sustainability, environmental product and packaging assessment, carbon accounting, life cycle assessments with focus on one or more of the following: environmental impact reporting, program management, Design, Manufacturing and Supply chain processes, Sustainability, Circular economy

    • Expertise with life cycle assessment methods, modeling approaches, data, and applications like GaBi, SimaPro, or equivalent

    • Understanding of product life cycles, including material science and flows, from sourcing to manufacturing to end-of-life recycling

    Preferred:

    • Experience developing parameterized process-based models for engineering and/or manufacturing processes;

    • Knowledge and experience with data center hardware products from component level to rack level items, and their packaging requirements

    • Knowledge of electronic component production (semiconductors, printed circuit boards, etc.), raw material production (aluminum, steel, plastics, etc.), mechanical part production (machining, stamping, injection molding, etc.) and/or industrial engineering is preferred

    • Familiarity with environmental indicators and impacts, particularly with respect to carbon, water, energy, and resources

    • Strong technical and analytical experience in the context of design for sustainability

    • Strong understanding of circular economy models

    • Strong organization and communication skills
