Why it can be worth it to take risks at work

As a woman in the workforce, taking risks can be intimidating. But sometimes, taking calculated risks can be the key to unlocking career growth and personal development. Here are some tips on when it's worth it to take risks at work:

When you've hit a ceiling

If you feel like you've hit a wall in terms of growth or opportunities within your current role or company, taking a risk may be necessary to break through that ceiling. This could mean taking on a new project or role that's outside of your comfort zone, or even considering a job change.

When the company is undergoing changes

Sometimes, changes within a company can create opportunities for growth and advancement. If your company is going through a merger, acquisition, or reorganization, consider taking a risk and stepping up to take on new responsibilities.

When you have a solid plan

Taking risks without a plan is just reckless. However, if you've carefully thought through the potential outcomes and have a solid plan in place, taking a calculated risk can pay off. Make sure to weigh the pros and cons and have contingency plans in place.

When you want to develop new skills

Taking risks can help you develop new skills and gain experience in areas outside of your comfort zone. This could be taking on a leadership role in a new project or volunteering for a task force.

When you want to challenge the status quo

If you see an opportunity to challenge the status quo and make a positive impact, taking a risk may be worth it. This could mean speaking up in meetings or presenting new ideas to your team.

While taking risks can be scary, it's important to remember that not taking risks can also hold you back in your career. However, it's important to note that taking risks is not for everyone, and it's okay if you're not comfortable with it. Here are some tips for women who have a hard time with change:

Start small

Taking risks doesn't have to mean making a huge career change. Start with small steps, such as speaking up in meetings or taking on a new responsibility within your current role.

Surround yourself with supportive people

Having a support system can help boost your confidence and make taking risks less intimidating. Find colleagues or friends who will encourage and support you.

Practice self-care

Taking risks can be stressful, so make sure to prioritize self-care. This could mean taking breaks throughout the day or practicing mindfulness exercises.

Remember, taking risks can lead to great rewards and help you achieve your career goals. But it's important to take calculated risks and have a plan in place. And if you're not comfortable with taking risks, that's okay too. Focus on your strengths and continue to develop your skills and knowledge in your current role.
