The celebrative evening started by an inspring speech from the Minister of Manpower and Second Minister of Home AffairsJosephine Teo, in her speech she has addressed as much as women in Singapore have made tremendous progress, we are still juggling between career and family and it means some women have not gone as far as they could have. Academically, women do just as well, if not better. At the early stages of their career, progress is not visibly slower, however, fast forward 10-20 years, we see their representation among senior management sliding to around 30%. In many cases, the years committed to care-giving resulted in missed opportunities for advancement and after taking time out, returning to previously held positions proved difficult.
Minister Teo also expressed that workplace culture clearly matters as it shapes how people feel about pursuing their aspirations for marriage and parenthood. It influences their sense of empowerment, to use policies like paternity leave provisions or to ask for flexible-work arrangements and ultimately, it impacts how working parents, especially mothers, fulfil their career potential.

The Women in It Awards Asia 2019 shines a light on female talent achieving success in the sector. We are also very grateful to be nominated alongside with JP Morgan, Thoughtworks, She Loves Data, The Codette Project, CodingGirls, SHE Blockchainers and Singapore Computer Society for Diversity Initiative of the Year. This category focuses on a specific diversity initiative or project that has been established to promote diversity in IT: in a specific company or for the wider community. Judges will assess the impact of this project and how successful it has been – based on tangible results – in closing the gender gap and promoting diversity in tech.
