Job Description

At Jacobs, we push the limits of what’s possible to make the world smarter, more connected and more sustainable. In our transport work, that means designing innovative solutions to move people and goods safely and efficiently across the globe. From rail systems mobilising accessible transit, to ports linking land and sea – when it comes to connecting the people and places of tomorrow, the future of transport depends on us.

Bring your curiosity, talent for multi-tasking, and extreme attention to detail, and we’ll help you grow, pursue and fulfill what drives you – so we can make big impacts on the world, together.

As a Transport Designer you are responsible for providing geometric design production on assigned Jacobs’ roads, highways and related civil projects within the Roads & Highways (R&H) section.

The Experienced Designer functions as an intermediate level designer supporting a team of road designers on assigned major projects and is able to work independently on small & medium scale projects where applicable.  The Experienced Designer is client facing and provides support to the engineering team to develop suitable road alignment options and solutions for assigned projects.  The Experienced Designer is expected to contribute to design production on projects utilising software in which they are knowledgeable and/or having expertise in.

Currently Jacobs utilise a range of geometric road design software, including 12d, MX, OpenRoads and Civil 3D, and whilst there is a preference for the Experienced Designer to be conversant in OpenRoads, the Experienced Designer may also be skilled in MX and/or 12d with an expectation that they will upskill to OpenRoads in due course, supported by additional on the job training.

The Experienced Designer will provide direction to junior designers and remote workshare staff in the correct application of design software, interpretation and application of design standards (in particular Austroads) and ensure that designs are produced in a consistent manner and to the quality expected by clients.

The Experienced Designer is required to interface with the Design Manager and Project Engineers, as well as interface with our offshore resources who are part of Jacobs’ Global Integrated Delivery (GID) team.   Our GID team are closely integrated with our local businesses within a virtual environment and work as dedicated team members alongside our local staff.  The Experienced Designer will attend and participate in team, project and client meetings.  He/she will also support the Sales team and contribute to their effort to win work by supporting tenders and proposals, in particular developing scope, deliverables and estimation of effort required for the numerous opportunities in the Roads and Highways pipeline.

The Experienced Designer reports to a Lead Designer and Team Leader within the Roads & Highways section of the Eastern Transport business and will be expected to network and collaborate with his/her peers within the ANZ region to promote productivity and best practices within evolving Digital Engineering frameworks.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Preferably bachelor’s degree in engineering, any 4-year related degree, two-year technical degree can also be considered for this role.

You need to have a minimum twelve years’ experience. Current knowledge of geometric modelling methods, applicable codes (AustRoads in particular) and specifications associated with road and highway infrastructure projects. Understanding of Transport for NSW/RMS and AustRoads design standards, including geometric design, barrier design, pavement and line marking design.

You also need to have experience with various aspects of the design process, construction methods and interface requirements of multi-disciplinary projects including but not limited to roads geometry, drainage, ITS and electrical, structures, noise walls and pavements. Liaison with clients including delivery partners. Working understanding of design and drafting software packages including but not limited to AutoCAD, MX, OpenRoads, 12d and Civil 3D.
